Telecoms firm increases its line rental to £13.80 a month, less than a week after BT announced a price rise
TalkTalk has become the latest telecoms company to put its prices up, with customers facing a 9.5% rise in line rental charges from 1 October.
The standard line rental charge will rise by £1.20 to £13.80 a month, but the price of UK calls will remain the same at 7.6p a minute during the day.
The price rises come less than a week after BT announced it would be putting up charges for its customers. The increase means TalkTalk's standard line rental charge will still be 80p a month cheaper than BT's, when the latter raises its prices in December, and 10p a month cheaper than Virgin, but more expensive than Plusnet at £11.99 a month and Sky at £12.25 a month.
About 4 million customers will be affected by the price rise, but TalkTalk said those who wanted to avoid the increase could sign up to a new deal called Value line rental. This offers line rental for just £9.50 a month but involves paying the whole sum – £114 – upfront.
It said this deal worked out cheaper than those offered by BT, Sky, Virgin and PlusNet.
Tristia Clarke, commercial director at TalkTalk, said: "Our customers have told us that they love getting great value and they want long-term confidence about their outgoings.
"Offering pay in advance line rental at such a low price offers a simple way for our customers to get the best value."
