Rapper denies jamming police phone lines by tweeting number of sheriff's office and telling his 580,000 followers to call it

The Game is under investigation by Los Angeles police for allegedly encouraging his followers to inundate them with phone calls. Police phone lines were overwhelmed after a tweet from the rapper's account invited his 580,000 Twitter followers to call an emergency services hotline, claiming it was a number to apply for a hip-hop "internship".

At first, the tweets seemed harmless enough: "Lookin 4 a intern," he wrote on Friday. "Male/female. Just picking some 1 randomly ... If u in LA & over the age 18 witta car, [contact] me." But the rapper allegedly tweeted a phone number – since deleted – belonging to Compton sheriff's office, jamming lines with hundreds of inquiries.

"This was beyond irresponsible," sheriff's captain Mike Parker told the LA Times . Under the flood of internship questions, police were unable to receive many legitimate emergency requests. "The deputies' ability to answer the phones and dispatch personnel to help these people in danger was significantly impeded," Parker said. It took almost two hours to trace the cause of the deluge and to contact the Game, asking him to call off his prospective interns.

After the LA Times reported the incident, the Game sent out a coy response. "It wasn't me (shaggy voice)," he wrote, referring to the 2000 pop hit . He also claimed it was an "accident" and joked about getting "hacked" [. "P.S.," he quipped, "who killed Biggie & Pac ???"

But the Game may not be able to laugh away the LAPD. It has officially opened a criminal investigation, with plans to forward a public safety complaint to the Los Angeles county district attorney's office. "Each phone call made [opens] the possibility for an additional charge," Parker said.

The Game is preparing to release his fourth album, The R.E.D. Album, on 23 August. He has previously scored two top 10 albums in the UK, including 2005's The Documentary, which sold more than 5m copies worldwide. In 2008, he served 60 days in jail for pulling a gun during a basketball game.
