Our holiday in Egypt was cut short – but Thomson charged us £1,535 for two return charter flights

My wife and I went on a two-week cruise to Egypt in January with Thomson Holidays – the first week on the Nile and the second in Cairo and Luxor. Within days of arriving, the situation in Egypt became potentially dangerous and Thomson returned us to the UK.

We got a refund of £512 but feel we should receive the £980 extra we paid for the second week. Thomson refuses and says it calculates refunds according to a formula. It deducted 60% of the total cost of the holiday for the flight and split the balance between nights we stayed and nights we missed. This meant it charged us £1,535 for two return charter flights. The formula penalises clients who take more-expensive packages because it's the accommodation that costs more. My insurance won't pay because our holiday was cut short by civil commotion, which is excluded. CF, Stockport, Greater Manchester

Thomson still won't budge. It says your holiday was not priced as a separate cruise and flight with hotels on top but is bundled as a package and it used the 60/40 formula under Abta guidelines. This makes it sound as though Abta insists it uses this calculation whereas Abta says it is only a guide.

Abta offered to look at your claim before advising whether it was worth going to arbitration but you have decided not to take it any further.
