The government has published the salaries of all public servants, including quango chiefs, who earn £150,000 or more.

The list shows that the highest paid person is the Nuclear Decommissioning Authorities chief executive, Tony Fountain, who is on a maximum salary of £379,999. He's followed by Dennis Hone, the chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority, who earns between £310,000 and £314,999. In all, ten members of the ODA are paid £2.1m between them.

Ministers hope that transparency in salaries will help to drive costs down. They point out that 291 people are on the list, which covers 2011, down on 345 in 2010. This represents a saving of 16%.

Francis Maude, the cabinet office minister, hailed the publication of the figures which follows his disclosure earlier this week that he has saved £3.75bn of cash savings by cutting our what he called "inefficiencies and unjustifiable costs" in central government.

Maude said: "As part of these savings we have slashed £10m off the salary bill of the top earners by reducing the number of officials earning over £150,00 by 16%. This is another example of cutting the deficit without cutting front line services."

The key numbers in the data show that:

• The maximum pay detailed come to £50,074,710
• The average maximum pay is £172,078
• The Ministry of Defence is the organisation with the highest number of staff in the list - 27, earning an average of £153,887.89 each
• Sir David Nicholson, the chief executive of the NHS whose basic salary is between £275,000 and £279,999, was given a "gross benefit in kind" of between £55,000 to £59,999 to help pay for a rented flat in London
