I found a better deal elsewhere but Phones 4u told me I had no cooling-off period and couldn't cancel
I agreed to upgrade my mobile phone with Vodafone through Phones 4u recently. My contract had not finished and this would be a continuation, albeit with a new phone (same number, same direct debit), and returning to 24 months.
The next day I found out it wasn't a very good deal but Phones 4u told me that because this is a continuation of the contract, it will be for another 24 months and I had no cooling-off period and therefore couldn't cancel. GD, Birmingham
Phones 4 U said the transaction hadn't gone through so you could, indeed, cancel, which is good news. However, you later discovered that the firm had processed the transaction – when this was brought to its attention, it said it had automatically gone through, but they would cancel it (again).
You have sensibly jotted down a record of your phone calls and times, just in case. You are still unhappy, as you believe you were being pitched to once more – at the time you were told the contract would be cancelled – for another 24-month contract.
Some mobile phone companies do call upgrades a "continuation" if there are months left on a contract, adding any remaining months to the new deal, turning 12-month contracts into, say, 15-month ones. Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for before agreeing to a new deal. Some consumers prefer to agree a new contract in store, for this reason.
